The Skints are here to rekindle your love for London
Living in London almost feels like being in a relationship where you can’t quite tell if it’s abusive or not. To your mates, everything is fine but behind closed doors, London is all take, take, take, making you feel like shit and draining you of all your fun and creativity. You’re just about to walk out but you pause at the door. What’s keeping you there for the moment are the memories of how good it used to be.
That’s when The Skints arrive. They’ve been sent by London and they’ve come round for a coffee and a chat to convince you to take London back. They know London’s been a dick but look, London’s made you a tape and the only song on it is one they’ve written called, ‘This Town’.
How can you stay mad at London with lyrics like, “because a rat inna di Underground don’t phase me”? You catch references to the Victoria Line, Brixton and Saxon Sound System and despite yourself, your heart begins to swell with pride.
‘This Town’, a song about London, cuts a lonely figure on the capital’s current musical landscape, but couldn’t sound any more London even if ‘My Old Man’s a Dustman’ came along and grabbed it by the Jackson Pollocks. Prince Fatty on production duties brings his trademark UK dub sounds, the smooth reggae bass line of Jon Doyle rides under the sweet tones of Jamie Kyriakides whilst Marcia Richards and Josh Waters Rudge provide variations of that unmistakable London MC kinda flow. It’s like getting to see everyone you want at Notting Hill Carnival! With the GENIUS collaboration of UK reggae heavy weights, Tippa Irie and Horseman, not only is this already brilliant song taken up a level, it’s a snapshot of multicultural London with its roots in the past but firmly looking into the future.
Only London can send a group like The Skints and a song like this. “London, city I was born in. You know I LOVE THIS TOWN…”
And without realising it, London is back in your good books. Damn it!
